Why you should take a Prenatal Breastfeeding Class and how my Tune has changed.

I'm going to be super honest!! I used to think a prenatal lactation class was a waste of time! If you're a prenatal massage client of mine, you may have even heard me say it. "It is so abstract, you're using a doll, gathering information and its so different once the baby is here", these things are all TRUE.

With that said, I have changed my tune, the reason is because at the core I still believe information is power. Whatever information that seeps into your brain with a hands on class is so much better than not. There is a lot of conflicting information out there. I'm seeing too many parents surprised by how often a newborn feeds, how much milk you should get while pumping, expectations of sleep for themselves and baby and the list goes on. Because we no longer live in community with our mothers, grandmothers, sisters aunts, we do not see breastfeeding women often. A prenatal lactation class really would benefit new families.

How a prenatal lactation class can be helpful in your breastfeeding journey.

Confidence and Preparedness

Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s also a skill that requires practice and the more you know ahead of time, the more confident you will feel. Expectant parents will learn the basics of breastfeeding, from understanding a newborn’s feeding cues to practicing various nursing positions. You will feel less intimidated when it’s time to breastfeed, making the transition smoother for both you and your baby.

Learning How to Latch and Position Properly

A proper latch is one of the most important aspects of comfortable, effective breastfeeding. You will learn specific techniques for achieving a good latch and positioning. These techniques reduce the risk of sore nipples, help ensure your baby is feeding efficiently, and improve your comfort

Understanding the Breastfeeding Process

You will learn about milk production, and supply.

You will learn to recognize feeding cues, signs that your baby is full, is your baby getting enough milk and gaining weight and how to keep up your supply for your growing baby.

Preparing for Common Challenges

You will learn to trouble shoot if you get clogged ducts, are engorged, have trouble latching, understand supply and what to do it you have too much or too little.

Gaining Insight into Newborn Feeding Patterns

Understanding a newborn’s feeding patterns, including how often newborns typically eat and how their feeding needs evolve over the first few weeks. You will feel more prepared for your baby's frequent feedings and better equipped to recognize hunger and fullness cues.

Pumping

You will learn how to pump and when to pump, increasing your supply and storing milk. We will go over short and long term goals.

Promoting Long-Term Breastfeeding Success

Studies have shown that parents who attend breastfeeding classes are more likely to continue breastfeeding longer. This is partly because classes help set realistic expectations and provide a strong foundation for overcoming early challenges.
